The so-called grapefruit diet is one of those mythic fad diets that seem to come and go every few years. It is a terrible diet - very low in calories, nutrient deficient, and cannot be sustained beyond a matter of days. You might lose some water, some muscle, and a bit of fat - then gain it all back again.
When I was a kid I had a fat cousin that was always eating grapefruit. Way back then the grapefruit diet was in vogue. Well, because she was fat I figured eating grapefruit had no real effect on weight loss. Later in life, as I grew older and began to get more and more interested in diet and exercise it hit me. Perhaps it was because she kept putting loads of sugar on her grapefruit in an effort to make it taste better? Turns out that grapefruit really is good for you. It is just that the grapefruit diet itself is a bit ridiculous.
